Indoor gardening can have many uses. People often only think of indoor gardening as pretty plants that make for a more natural look and feel for your home. I am not saying that colorful lush indoor gardens are not beautiful, but there are other benefits to consider. Indoor gardening can provide as a natural air cleaner. Indoor plants do not only remove carbon dioxide and give off fresh oxygen, but also clear your home of toxins. Having 1 indoor plant per 90 square feet can be enough to keep your house clean of toxins. Indoor gardening is a hobby that gives healthy benefits to your home. You can also grow an organic indoor herb or vegetable garden, which can have additional health benefits.
The first thing to think about when creating an indoor garden is how much light will be available for your plants. Often plants in a home do not always have full sun areas available. If there is a lack of sun in your home, you should purchase medium light plants. Your nursery should have tags on the plants for sale that give this information. One way you can get around this is by having some sort of artificial light. This would be needed for example when growing most vegetables such as the tomato or cucumber. An herb garden can take somewhat less light and give impressive results. Some examples of culinary herbs you can grow include chives, oregano and parsley. You should pick plants on their ability to grow in your conditions, the adaptability and strength of a plant and your available finances. Some plants can hold up much better to lack of water and little light. Some plants can be much more expensive than others and pre grown plants cost much more in comparison to seedlings.
A simple thing to remember when growing an indoor garden is turning your pots every once in a while to have a balanced growth. Also when watering make sure to not over water, indoor plants take a lot less water than outdoor plants. Though different plants will require different amounts of water so you should research the correct amount for your particular plants. It is also important to mention that the garden pots that the plants are grown in should have proper drainage. Some signs of over watering include yellow leaves. You can also tell if light is lacking by noticing really small sometimes-scraggly growth. I should also mention that temperature is also important. An average houseplant should be grown between 60-70 degrees forethought. Though a slight difference in this temperature hotter or colder will not do too much damage to the plant, dramatic or sudden changes can cause sever damage to the plants health. If the plant is growing at to cold of a temperature it will show yellow leaves.
Indoor gardening does have benefits in comparison to outdoor gardening. Indoor gardens do not suffer from insect invasions and outside colder temperature will not affect an indoor plant as much. Though indoor gardening is not in itself a difficult task, for the beginner gardener I recommend plants such as the Cyprus, philodendron, bromeliads, and fatsia. Plants such as these will help you get off on the right foot because they can handle sudden changes better than the average plant.
